A New Season

So I guess it is official, pool season is pretty much over (I say this, however Soren has continued to swim in our freezing pool every evening).  The days of waking up, putting on a bathing suit and spending the day in the pool are past and now I have to find activities for the kids each day.  And now that my boys and Timmy are on different schedules, that means that I have lost my social planner, Amy.

Week one of adventures took us to one of our favorite outings…The Bog Walk.  I am happy to say that both kids did great and Bodie took very little coaxing to make it to the end.

A Night at the Races

Soren and Bodie’s good friends, Mason and Meah have taken up the new hobby of go-kart racing.  They have the pimped out go-karts with sponsors and everything…it seriously is like little NASCAR in training.  Mason and Meah…okay, mostly Mason….have been so excited about their new sport. Of course, since Mason is the older and wiser,  Soren and Bodie think that anything Mason thinks is cool must be cool.  So we decided to take a much needed family night and check out the races.

Since growing up in my family, most family activities included twirling wine and sticking your nose in it to smell the bouquet over a game of Trivial Pursuit or political discussions, the NASCAR culture is a bit foreign to me. This became abundantly clear when I asked if the 15 laps around the go-kart track was the standard number of laps for NASCAR (apparently it is actually 500). Nonetheless, it was a very fun and educational experience.

The kids had a great time on the bleachers and running around an awesomely kid-safe yard!

IMG_5921IMG_5923Soren enjoyed some time with Meah, the girl who he is quite determined that he is going to marry some day.

IMG_5932IMG_5933IMG_5934IMG_5930IMG_5931Nothing like a little pig-piling to pass the time.

For the races, we stayed safely in the spectator area. But during intermission, the spectators are invited to go behind the scenes for an up-close look at the karts.

Meah was very happy to show the boys around.

IMG_5938John, Mason and Meah’s father, was kind enough to let the kids have a seat in the karts.  In the mind of a 2 and 4yo, there are few things that are cooler than this!  IMG_5940IMG_5941IMG_5942IMG_5946

Meah’s kart had been put away for the night, but the boys didn’t seem to mind climbing into the back of the truck for a quick ride.  While Bodie enjoyed Mason’s kart, he couldn’t get enough of Meah’s because he could actually touch the pedals.  I think I see a go-kart racing future for our little Boodle.

So overall, it was just an awesome night. We were so happy to get to see Mason and Meah in all of their racing glory!  We got to spend a few hours together as a family (seriously, very rare occurrence these days). And I think we may have found a future hobby.  I never liked wine or Trivial Pursuit anyway, I’ve always been more of a Bud Light and backyard fire kind of girl anywaySmile

Sound Asleep

The other night, I went in for my nightly post-asleep check and I thought I had lost Soren. I looked under all of the blankets, under the bed, on both bunks.  As I turned to leave the room to see if he somehow escaped his bedroom, I found him…

Seriously?!…Why?!…

The sun was shining, the boys were enjoying a nice breakfast outside, they had been so well behaved so far that morning…yep it was a great day.  I took this quiet pocket of good behavior to return a quick call from the trailer park.  In the two minutes I was occupied in the office, my sweet little well behaved boys came up with an awesome idea. They came inside, got into the fridge, got the brand new tub of butter, brought it outside, smeared it all over the driveway and the dog, and ice skated in it. Seriously?!…Why?!…

IMG_5865IMG_5866IMG_5867IMG_5868IMG_5869

IMG_5870Of course the dog proceeded to lick up the entire tub of butter and spent the rest of the day throwing up…yep, it was a good day!

Death Trap or Refuge

Our beloved pool often is a death trap for various wildlife creatures. We have pulled many a mouse, frog, and bug out of the pool. We just add a little more chlorine and go on with our day.  But last week, the boys were feeling sympathetic and we managed to make a few saves.

IMG_5813IMG_5814IMG_5815The frog was a big hit and we made a cozy little home for him.  Unfortunately, we had added two packages of shock to the pool about an hour before we found him.  I think that mixture of chemicals and Bodie’s delicate touch were just too much for him, and our poor froggie friend did not make it through the afternoon. May he rest in peace.

IMG_5818IMG_5820Once we were done mourning our frog (and believe me, for Bodie it was quite a mourning process!)  We moved on to our next save.

Lucky for the grasshopper, he had a much happier outcome.
